Earlier this month, the WildINTEL and BIG_PICTURE projects joined forces at the 8th European Congress of Conservation Biology (ECCB 2026) in Leiden to host a two-part symposium on the future of camera-trap based wildlife monitoring. Across 12 presentations, researchers from both biodiversa+ projects and partner institutions shared the latest advances in camera trapping, artificial intelligence, citizen science, Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs), ecological modelling, and FAIR biodiversity data. More importantly, the symposium highlighted the value of collaboration. By bringing together complementary expertise from across Europe, WildINTEL and BIG_PICTURE are helping to build harmonised, scalable approaches for monitoring wildlife and supporting biodiversity conservation. A big thank you to all speakers, organisers, and everyone who joined the discussions. We are grateful for the inspiring exchange of ideas and look forward to continuing this collaboration in the years ahead.

An unexpected partnership in Espacio Natural de Doñana!A fallow deer (Dama dama) shares the forest with an Iberian magpie (Cyanopica cooki). These intelligent birds are often seen following large mammals, feeding on insects stirred up by their movement and sometimes helping remove parasites, a fascinating example of wildlife interactions captured by our camera traps.

We are pleased to announce a new scientific publication by members of the WildINTEL team. The article, “Changes in wildlife activity patterns in response to war in Ukraine”, published in Science, reveals that the Russian invasion of Ukraine caused immediate changes in wildlife behaviour in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. An intensive and highly productive meeting in Madrid, during which the project partners reviewed progress and planned the next steps for the WildINTEL project, was successfully concluded with a visit to Madrid’s Botanical Garden.

We had the chance to share the WildIntel project at the XVII SECEM Sociedad Ibérica para la Conservación y Estudio de los Mamíferos – SECEM Congress! Nuria Selva presented the project, and Santiago Gutiérrez showcased Doñana findings on predator–prey links between European rabbits, Iberian hares, and mesocarnivores.
